My Afro hair journey started in January 2014. Actually, I did not realize it was trending. I just wanted something different from the regular hair styles we are all used to in Nigeria; the Brazillian hair, peruvian hair, mongolian hair, Indian hair, Curly hair, the list is endless.
So I thought of something different, something that will make you turn your head to look at me again when we meet for the first time(not in a weird way tho..lol). Then I decided to go natural.
Am actually allergic to cutting my hair. I can't even imagine the thought of a clipper raving through my hair. The first and last time i did cut my hair was when i was about getting into JSS1. I was a bit excited about going to the barbers for a shave. All my life, I have always grown my hair. I really wanted to know what it felt like to shave. It's quite interesting I did not really enjoy the feeling. I couldnt wait to get to SS1 to grow my hair back (as that was the case back then).
Well my point is that shaving my hair for the second time was a no go area.So I decided to transition from relaxed to natural hair. I stopped applying relaxer and chemicals to my hair. I would trim off the relaxed tips every two months.
It was not a pleasant journey anyways. I've had periods i did not know whatelse to do with the hair. I had to do very protective hairstyles mostly stitched-together weavons and a bit of braiding here and there.
But I would say those sacrifices finally paid off. I got the look I wanted and am happy.
Afro is trending in Nigeria Kinda. Am glad I got the look when I wanted. I have no plans to get back to relaxed hair anytime too. Am planning to be an Afro Bride.
